David
was born in Langdon, ND, to C. Arthur and Shirley (Klai) Monson and was
raised on the family farm in the Osnabrock, ND, area.
He
attended school in Osnabrock, graduating in 1968 with the honor of
Valedictorian. He attended college in Williston, ND, where he
attained an AA degree in 1970. He finished his BS in Education at the
University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND, in the spring of 1972.
That summer he and Mary Greutman of Williston were married. They made their
home in Hankinson, ND, where David was a science and psychology
teacher and an assistant boys basketball coach until the spring of
1975. David also taught Sunday School in Hankinson and was active in
the church there. David and Mary moved back to the family farm in
Osnabrock where David started farming his uncle's farm and farming in
partnership with his father.
David
was called to teach science in Nekoma, ND, in the fall of 1975 where he
taught until the school closed in 1980. During his time in
Nekoma, David began work on his MEd degree at the University of North
Dakota, became the High School Principal, and took his first Superintendent
job in the fall of 1979. He and Mary also started their family with
their first son, Cordell, being born in 1977, and another son, Cale, being
born in 1979.
David
farmed full-time in 1980 and began teaching again in 1981 in Milton, ND,
where he taught science and was secondary principal for three years.
During that time David and Mary had their third son, Jared, who was born in
1983. David finished his MEd degree in 1983 and became the
Superintendent at Adams, ND, in the fall of 1984 where he remained until
1988. At that time David made a career change and started working for
New York Life Insurance Company while continuing to farm with his
dad. He expanded his insurance business, starting his own insurance
agency, which he continued for a number of years. In the meantime,
David also entered politics in the fall of 1992 when he first ran for the
ND House in District 10. In the fall of 1995 he went back into
the education field at Edinburg, ND, where he became Superintendent.
David
balanced his family, political career, farming, insurance business, and
education career for a few years until he sold his insurance agency in
2001. He retired from teaching in 2005 and is only part-time as a
science teacher and secondary principal in Edinburg since then. He
continues to farm and has been in the ND House continuously since he first
ran in 1992. During his political career, David has served on the
Education Committee, Transportation Committee, and now the Appropriations
Committee since 1999. He has been in leadership in the ND House since
1999, as well.
David
and Mary's second son, Cale, married Kristeen Hoffman in
2003. Cale and Kristeen blessed them with the latest
addition to their family, a granddaughter, Alexis Marie Monson, who
was born in January, 2007. Their oldest son, Cordell, recently got
married to Marielle Evers of Luxembourg.
David's
hobbies include gardening, hunting, and coin collecting. David is
active in his church providing pulpit supply when the minister is on
vacation or unable to do the sermon or service.
David
often reflects on the wonderful life God has given him; a dedicated
wife of over 35 years, 3 successful sons, several fantastic careers, and
now a granddaughter. Along the way he had cancer which he beat in
1991. Although his father passed away in 2006, the lessons he learned
from him are put to good use everyday in dealing with people, operating the
farm, and putting strong moral fiber into every major decision whether in
the legislature or everyday life. David's mother still lives in
Osnabrock and is quite active in church and volunteering at the Good Sam
Center in Osnabrock.
